₦500m Subsidy: Lagos Poultry Farmers Anticipate Egg Price Drop

The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Lagos State chapter, has projected a decline in egg prices due to the continuation of the state’s farmers’ feed subsidy programme.

Speaking in an interview on Friday, PAN Lagos Chairman, Mojeed Iyiola, praised the state government’s ₦500 million Ounje Eko Farmers Subsidy Programme (Ounje Eko FSP), which grants a 25% subsidy on poultry and fish feed. He noted that if sustained beyond the four-week test phase, the initiative would significantly reduce egg prices and boost local agricultural production.

Currently, a crate of eggs sells between ₦5,000 and ₦6,000, a sharp rise from ₦2,800 to ₦3,000 in early 2024. The subsidy distribution began on February 5 and will continue every Wednesday throughout the month.

Iyiola commended the Lagos State Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems for their intervention, emphasizing the programme’s potential to stabilize the poultry industry and benefit both farmers and consumers.
