The Supreme Court is set to determine the winner of the July 16, 2022, Osun State governorship election, and both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state are hopeful for victory. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Ademola Adeleke of the PDP as the winner with 403,371 votes, defeating the incumbent governor Adegboyega Oyetola of the APC, who got 375,027 votes. Oyetola and the APC rejected the result and approached the Election Petition Tribunal, which declared Oyetola the winner of the poll on January 27, 2023, after annulling Adeleke’s victory. However, a minority judgment affirmed Adeleke as the winner, leading the PDP to head to the Court of Appeal, which on March 24 nullified the tribunal judgment and returned Adeleke as the winner.
Unhappy with the verdict, Oyetola and the PDP headed to the Supreme Court, which held the matter on Monday and scheduled judgment for Tuesday. Osun APC spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, expressed confidence in victory, stating that his party had presented a watertight case before the panel. He urged everyone to go about their business, with no room for any form of crisis. Oladele Olabamiji, the Osun PDP Director of Media, expressed optimism that the apex court would uphold the verdict of the Court of Appeal that validated Adeleke’s victory in the governorship poll. Olabamiji said that the party trusted in God and believed that justice would be done.
