APC Governors Hold Private Meeting Following Leadership Resignations; Kyari Elected New National Chairman Amid Speculation of Forced Resignations
Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) convened a closed-door meeting on Wednesday evening to address the party’s current situation after the resignation of its National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, and National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore.
The duo stepped down on Monday, clearing the path for the Deputy National Chairman (North), Senator Abubakar Kyari, to assume the position of the party’s National Chairman.
The meeting, chaired by Senator Hope Uzodinma, Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum, saw the participation of Governors Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), Umar Bago (Niger), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Uba Sani (Kaduna), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Dikko Umar Radda (Katsina), Nasir Idris (Kebbi), and the acting governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Senator Kyari assumed the role of the party’s chairman following the National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Abuja on Monday. In a briefing after the NWC meeting, Kyari officially announced Adamu and Omisore’s resignations as the National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively. According to the party’s constitution, the Deputy National Secretary, Festus Fuanter, will serve as the acting National Secretary of the APC.
In response to the resignations, former APC National Legal Adviser, Muiz Banire, SAN, suggested that the departures might not have been voluntary but forced. He discussed this on Channels Television’s Politics Today after Kyari’s election as the new APC National Chairman and the announcement of Adamu and Omisore’s resignations.
Banire pointed out that various issues concerning the maladministration of the party and misappropriation of funds, raised by Mr Lukman Saliu and others, may have contributed to the resignations. He mentioned that such issues are common challenges faced by the NWC. He opined that the pressure from their colleagues might have eventually led Adamu and Omisore to tender their resignations, indicating that the resignations might not have been entirely voluntary.
The developments within the APC have sparked discussions about the party’s internal affairs, and the meeting aimed to address these issues and chart a way forward.
