French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Israel to halt its bombing campaign in Gaza, emphasizing that there is no legitimacy for the attacks that result in the deaths of civilians. In an interview with the BBC, Macron expressed concern for the lives of innocent people, including babies, women, and the elderly, who are being affected by the bombings.
Macron condemned the actions of Hamas as “terrorist” but also called on Israel to cease its bombing in Gaza, stating that a ceasefire would be in Israel’s best interest. While recognizing Israel’s right to self-defense, Macron emphasized the need for an end to the violence.
Addressing the reluctance of the United States to support a full ceasefire, Macron expressed hope that leaders, including those in the U.S. and Britain, would join his calls for a cessation of hostilities. However, Washington has advocated for temporary pauses in fighting to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid.
Hamas initiated a surprise attack on Israel on October 7, resulting in casualties. The subsequent Israeli response, involving intense bombings and ground assaults, has led to the death of over 11,000 Palestinians, primarily women and children, according to health officials.
In response to Macron’s remarks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu argued that global leaders should condemn Hamas rather than Israel. Netanyahu warned that the crimes committed by Hamas in Gaza could potentially occur elsewhere in the world.
Macron’s interview coincided with a humanitarian conference on Gaza held in Paris, where the consensus among governments and agencies was the necessity of a humanitarian pause leading to a ceasefire. Macron stressed that the lives of civilians unrelated to terrorism must be protected.
International bodies, including the United Nations and human rights groups, have raised alarms about the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. The global organization has highlighted that the lives of one million children are at risk.
In the context of the conflict, France has implemented measures such as banning pro-Palestinian rallies and cracking down on protests against civilian casualties in Gaza. These actions are part of France’s response to the ongoing war and efforts to address the humanitarian crisis in the region.
