Inter Miami has advanced its Barcelona reunion initiative by bringing Luis Suarez on board ahead of the 2024 MLS season.
The spotlight on Tata Martino’s side intensified following Lionel Messi’s move to Florida, and the trend continued as former Blaugrana teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba decided to join him in 2023. Now, Messi is set to rejoin forces with his former strike partner, Suarez, at the DRV PNK Stadium, potentially posing a significant threat to MLS defenses in the upcoming months.
Despite their combined age of 72, the duo is prepared to embark on a new chapter in the USA after years of terrorizing La Liga defenses with Barcelona. Inter Miami is poised to kick off the new MLS season in February, and fans are eagerly anticipating the prospect of witnessing Messi and Suarez back on the field together.
On December 22, 2023, Luis Suarez was officially unveiled as a new Inter Miami player. Expressing his happiness and excitement, the Uruguayan star stated, “I’m very happy and excited to take on this new challenge with Inter Miami. I can’t wait to get started, and I’m ready to work to make the dream of winning more titles with this great club a reality. I’m optimistic about what we can achieve together with our shared ambition.”
Suarez pledged to give his all to bring joy to the Inter Miami fans, reunite with friends and players, and meet his new teammates and coaches. The announcement did not catch many by surprise, as Suarez had dropped significant hints about his plan to join Inter Miami at the end of 2023 when his contract with Gremio expired.
The veteran Uruguay international successfully negotiated an early exit from his Gremio deal, citing a worsening long-standing knee injury due to the extended season, a request the club accommodated. Concluding the 2023 Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A season with 17 league goals, Suarez earned the accolade for the best player in the league in 2023.
Suarez’s transition to Inter Miami occurred as a free transfer, eliminating the need for a transfer fee. His contract with the club is set for the 2024 MLS season, with an option to extend it for another year. While Inter Miami has not officially disclosed Suarez’s salary details, reports suggest a substantial pay cut, estimating around $200,000 per year. With a net worth of $70 million, Suarez’s financial standing reflects a career spent at the highest echelons of the game for nearly two decades.
Anticipated to join his new teammates at the beginning of 2024 as preseason activities intensify in January, Suarez is expected to feature in the offseason schedule to enhance match fitness. Inter Miami’s first competitive game of the season, against Real Salt Lake, is scheduled for Wednesday, February 21, with a potential unofficial debut in a friendly match against El Salvador on January 19, 2024.
