Lionel Messi clinched his third FIFA “The Best” award on Monday, outshining Manchester City’s Erling Haaland to claim the title of the best men’s player in 2023. Despite Haaland’s impressive debut season with 52 goals for Manchester City, Messi secured the victory by leading Paris Saint-Germain to Ligue 1 triumph and securing the Leagues Cup shortly after joining Inter Miami.
This accolade adds to Messi’s achievements, coming a mere three months after his historic eighth Ballon d’Or win. The Argentine superstar prevailed in the voting against Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, securing the majority of votes from national team captains and coaches.
While Messi’s individual performance might not have been extraordinary in the past year, his contributions to Inter Miami, including 11 goals in 14 appearances and winning the Leagues Cup, solidified his standing as the Best men’s player. This marks Messi’s second consecutive year securing FIFA’s Best men’s player, having previously claimed the honor in 2022 and 2019.
