Liverpool Eyes Zubimendi as Transfer Activity Set to Soar in August.

Liverpool remain the only Premier League club yet to secure a summer signing. New manager Arne Slot is seeking a new No. 6 midfielder, with Martin Zubimendi emerging as a potential target. The Spanish international, who replaced Rodri at halftime in the Euro 2024 final against England, has a £51m release clause. He is also being considered by Manchester United and has long been admired by Arsenal.

Securing Zubimendi would mark the first major acquisition for Liverpool’s new sporting director, Richard Hughes. Hughes mentioned last month that July would be quiet due to ongoing international tournaments but anticipated a surge in transfer activity in August.

Liverpool’s need for a new No. 6 has been evident since Fabinho’s departure 12 months ago. Although Japan international Wataru Endo was signed from Stuttgart late last August for £16m, he was seen as a short-term solution. Last season, Alexis Mac Allister often played in the No. 6 role, and Liverpool recently rejected a £12m bid from Marseille for Endo.

Analysis: Why Zubimendi is in Demand

England fans were surprised when Rodri left the European Championship final against Spain due to injury. However, Zubimendi’s performance as his replacement was so seamless that it barely affected Spain’s game. In fact, Spain seemed to improve with Zubimendi on the field.

Mikel Oyarzabal’s late goal secured the victory, but Zubimendi’s influence was equally significant. He completed almost all his passes, won all his duels, and made the most tackles, helping Spain dominate Gareth Southgate’s side. His composed performance highlighted why he is one of Europe’s most sought-after holding midfielders.

Though Rodri’s presence in the Spain squad has limited his international appearances, Zubimendi has been a key player for Real Sociedad, featuring in 103 out of 114 La Liga games over the last three seasons. His performances have been impressive both domestically and in European competitions, including the Champions League last season.

At 25, with his peak years ahead, Zubimendi’s defensive and tactical skills, combined with his excellent ball-playing abilities, make him highly desirable to many top clubs.

Transfer Window Information

The 2024 summer transfer window officially closes on August 30 at 11 PM UK time for the Premier League and 11:30 PM in Scotland. The Premier League has aligned its Deadline Day with other major European leagues, following discussions with leagues in England, Germany, Italy, Spain, and France.
