Manchester United and captain Bruno Fernandes are nearing an agreement on a new contract that would keep the Portugal international at Old Trafford until 2027, with an option for an additional year. This development comes as Manchester United prepares for their Premier League opener against Fulham on Friday Night Football, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
Fernandes, who joined Manchester United in January 2020, currently has two years remaining on his existing deal, which was extended in 2022. Since his arrival, he has played a key role in the club’s successes, including winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup under manager Erik ten Hag, and reaching the Europa League final in the 2020/21 season.
Despite some media speculation about a potential summer departure, Fernandes has expressed his desire to remain at Manchester United. In a statement on the Players’ Tribune in May, he emphasized his commitment to the club and its goals. “I love to step out at Old Trafford more than anything in the world. I don’t want to leave. This has always been my ultimate dream,” Fernandes said.
He continued, “I just want my expectations to align with the club’s expectations. We want to compete for the league, play in the Champions League, and reach cup finals. That is the standard. That is what I want. That is what you all deserve. I want to keep fighting. My family and I want to be here.”
The new Premier League season kicks off for Manchester United on August 16 with a match against Fulham. Following that, they will travel to Brighton before facing a major derby against Liverpool at home on September 1. The return fixture against Liverpool will take place on January 4, 2025, at Anfield. Notable fixtures also include a Boxing Day clash against Wolves and a season finale at home against Aston Villa on May 25, 2025.
