Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has turned down a move to Liverpool, despite the Premier League giants being the only top-flight club yet to secure a summer signing. The 25-year-old, who had a £51m release clause, was expected to depart Sociedad this summer, but the Basque club’s efforts to retain him with a lucrative new contract have paid off.
Liverpool, under new manager Arne Slot, are still searching for a midfield reinforcement, with Zubimendi now off the table. Slot can currently rely on players such as Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Wataru Endo, with Trent Alexander-Arnold also having played a midfield role last season under Jurgen Klopp.Zubimendi recently impressed on the international stage, playing a pivotal role in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory over England. He has been with Real Sociedad since 2011 and contributed significantly to their sixth-place finish last season, netting four goals in 31 appearances.Arne Slot will start his Liverpool tenure with a match against newly promoted Ipswich Town on the opening weekend of the 2024/25 Premier League season. The fixture list includes high-profile clashes with Manchester United and Manchester City, as well as the first Merseyside derby against Everton on December 7. Liverpool will conclude their season with games against Chelsea and Arsenal in May, and Crystal Palace on the final day.
