Jonathan Denies Dismissing Sanusi Over Missing $49.8bn Allegation, Calls for Further Research

Adelopo Abdullah September 27, 2024
Goodluck-Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has refuted claims that he dismissed former Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi (now Emir of Kano), over allegations of $49.8 billion missing from government coffers. Speaking at a book launch in Abuja, Jonathan maintained that no such money went missing during his administration. He explained that Sanusi was suspended, not sacked, due to financial infractions flagged by the Financial Reporting Council, unrelated to Sanusi’s whistleblowing on oil revenue discrepancies.

Jonathan further clarified that Sanusi’s initial claim of $49.8bn unaccounted for was later revised to $20bn and then $12bn, casting doubt on the validity of the allegations. He cited a Price Waterhouse Coopers investigation and a Senate Committee on Finance report, both of which found no evidence of such massive losses. Jonathan also shared an anecdote about former German Chancellor Angela Merkel confronting him over the claims, which he dismissed as implausible.

Sanusi, who served as Royal Father at the event, responded by stating that he was “constructively dismissed” and continued to respect Jonathan despite their differences.
