Only 21 Nigerian Universities Make Global Ranking, Say Educators
An expert in Ecclesiastical Theology and Human Development, Prof. Moses Idowu, revealed that just 21 Nigerian universities were recognized in the latest global ranking, out of a total of 274. This result, according to Idowu, reflects the misgovernance and mismanagement affecting not only Nigeria’s educational institutions but the country as a whole.
Idowu noted in an online post that only two private universities—Covenant University and Landmark University—both affiliated with the Living Faith Tabernacle, made it to Bands A and B, signifying top-tier performance.
He further analyzed the results, stating, “No federal or state university made the list of the top 1,000 universities. Covenant University, in Band A, stands as the best in the country, while Ahmadu Bello University, University of Ibadan, Landmark University, and University of Lagos are ranked in Band B (1001-1200).” He highlighted that 19 other universities fell into Bands B-D, with 15 being federal universities and four state universities.
Idowu criticized stakeholders for celebrating the rankings, calling it a national shame that a private institution like Covenant University, which operates without public funding, ranked higher than renowned federal universities like Obafemi Awolowo University, now in Band D.
Educators like Dr. Ifeanyi Onyike of Dominican University emphasized that for Nigeria to improve its global ranking, the government must prioritize homegrown talent over foreign qualifications. He also called for educational subsidies or, alternatively, the privatization of federal universities to allow them to operate profitably.
Dr. Oladipo Kolawole of Adeleke University suggested that improvements in research output, investment in modern facilities, and increased international collaboration could help Nigerian universities climb the global rankings. He highlighted that focusing on specialized fields, such as agriculture or health sciences, could also boost visibility and reputation.
As Nigerian universities strive for better recognition on the global stage, educators stress the need for systemic reforms, better funding, and a renewed focus on research and collaboration to transform the sector.
