Frustrated GoTV Subscribers Demand Compensation After Sudden Channel Outage

GoTV subscribers, especially football fans across Nigeria, were left frustrated on Tuesday night when multiple channels, including sports and news networks, abruptly went offline. The disruption came just as fans eagerly anticipated watching Champions League matches on the popular prepaid satellite service.

Subscribers Vent Their Frustration

The outage, which affected channels such as SS BLITZ Africa, SS Football Africa, SS La Liga Africa, and more, caused widespread disappointment among viewers. Several other channels, including M-Net Movies 4, ROK, Africa Magic Epic, Al Jazeera, and CNN International, also went off earlier in the week and had not been restored as of Wednesday.

PUNCH Metro reports that many affected subscribers have demanded compensation from MultiChoice, the parent company of GoTV. In separate interviews, some subscribers expressed their disappointment, questioning the company’s lack of communication about the disruption.

“I was shocked when I couldn’t find any of the sports channels. I thought there might be an issue with the antenna,” said Sanjo, a football viewing center owner in Ojodu Berger. “It was a catastrophe for my business, especially during Champions League nights when demand is high.”

Satellite Failure Behind the Disruption

Investigations revealed that the outage was caused by a power failure of the Intelsat 33e satellite, which serves regions including Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. The failure, which occurred on Saturday, cut service to multiple customers, including MultiChoice, leading to the widespread disruption.

A Real Madrid fan, Adebola Oluwatosin, shared his frustration, saying he had paid for a subscription only to be unable to watch the match against Borussia Dortmund. “I bought fuel because there was no power supply, only to find that all the sports channels had disappeared. They need to compensate us,” he emphasized, questioning whether MultiChoice would extend the subscription period to make up for the lost service days.

MultiChoice Responds

When reached for comment, MultiChoice’s spokesperson Caroline Oghuma acknowledged the disruption, explaining that the company was “working to restore services for all its customers.” She attributed the issue to a “technical problem with one of our satellite providers, Intelsat.”

As subscribers continue to demand clarity and compensation for the disruption, many are waiting for further updates on service restoration and potential measures to address the inconvenience.
