Vice President Kashim Shettima has stated that Nigeria is witnessing a surge in reverse medical tourism, with patients from the U.S. and other countries choosing Nigerian hospitals for affordable, high-quality kidney transplants.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Nigerian Association of Nephrology (NAN) ahead of its 37th Scientific Conference, Shettima highlighted the expertise and affordability driving this trend. He noted that 13 U.S. patients recently underwent kidney transplants at Zenith Medical and Kidney Centre.
Shettima praised Zenith Medical’s Chief Medical Director, Dr. Olalekan Olatise, for his contributions to kidney care. However, he acknowledged the financial burden on patients, emphasizing the need for sustained investment in specialized medical education.
Recalling his tenure as Borno State Governor, Shettima mentioned healthcare initiatives such as free maternal care and sponsoring female students for medical studies abroad.
Dr. Olatise, also the Chairman of NAN’s 37th Conference, announced that Shettima would receive the Kidney Champion Award for his advocacy and support for kidney patients. The conference, themed “Revolutionizing Kidney Care in Nigeria: Evidence-Based Innovations,” will take place in Abuja from February 19-21, 2025.
