The Federal Government will meet with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPPS) on Wednesday to discuss the proposed extension of basic education to 12 years.

The proposal by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, seeks to integrate junior and senior secondary education into a single continuous program. ANCOPPS President, Musa Ibrahim, clarified that the plan is still under discussion and has not been enacted into law.

NUT President, Audu Amber, stressed the need for further analysis before making any official stance. Meanwhile, Parent-Teacher Association Chairman, Haruna Danjuma, welcomed the idea, highlighting its potential to reduce dropout rates and improve vocational training.

The meeting in Abuja is expected to provide more clarity on the policy’s implementation.
