PDP Crisis: South-South Leaders Reject Benin Meeting, NWC Divided Over Anyanwu

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing escalating internal conflicts as key figures challenge the party’s leadership.

On Thursday in Abuja, National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu refused to step down for Sunday Ude-Okoye, despite pressure from governors, the Board of Trustees (BoT), and the National Working Committee (NWC).

Meanwhile, in the South-South, Zonal Secretary Chief Felix Omemu rejected a planned zonal executive meeting in Edo State, called by Chief Dan Orbih. Orbih, along with other party leaders in Edo, had supported Governor Monday Okpebholo in the last election instead of the PDP’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo.

The zonal meeting is scheduled for February 15 in Benin City, but Omemu called it illegal, stating that the Zonal Working Committee had not approved it. He urged party leaders to boycott the gathering, warning it could harm the party’s interests.

NWC Split Over Anyanwu’s Position

At the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, Anyanwu remained in office, insisting he was still the party’s National Secretary. His stance is supported by the PDP in Imo State, which argues that his position remains intact until the Supreme Court rules otherwise.

However, a faction of the NWC, led by National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade, has recognized Ude-Okoye as the new National Secretary, aligning with the PDP Governors’ Forum and BoT. Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, however, did not support this move, further dividing the party’s leadership.

Ekiti PDP Moves Toward Reconciliation

In Ekiti State, PDP leaders are working to resolve internal conflicts ahead of the 2026 governorship election. Caretaker Committee Chairman Chief Dare Adeleke emphasized the need for unity, stating that party congresses were postponed due to the national crisis.

At a stakeholders’ meeting in Ado Ekiti, leaders including former state chairmen and governorship aspirants reaffirmed their commitment to party unity. They expressed confidence that the PDP remains popular in Ekiti and can reclaim power from the ruling APC in 2026.
