Ndume calls for investigation into USAID over terrorism financing claims

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has called for an investigation into the operations of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Nigeria, citing suspicions over its activities.

Speaking on Arise News on Wednesday, Ndume raised concerns following allegations by U.S. Congressman Scott Perry that USAID has been funding terrorist groups, including Boko Haram. Perry made these claims during a U.S. congressional hearing, which has since prompted an investigation.

Ndume emphasized the seriousness of the allegation, especially as Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, had also warned about international organizations allegedly funding and training Boko Haram terrorists.

He argued that USAID operates without proper oversight from the Nigerian government and security agencies. “They come under the pretense of providing aid, but we are not allowed to question their activities. This is an opportunity to investigate,” he said.

The Nigerian Senate has responded by summoning top security officials, including the National Security Adviser and heads of intelligence agencies, to discuss the claims.

Meanwhile, U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, has denied the allegations, stating that there is no evidence of USAID funding Boko Haram. He assured that if any proof emerges, the U.S. government will collaborate with Nigerian authorities to address it.
