Nigeria’s Gas Output Surges 15.6% to 227,931.65 mscf in March 2025

Nigeria’s natural gas production witnessed a significant boost in March 2025, rising by 15.6% month-on-month to reach 227,931.65 million standard cubic feet (mscf), according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
On a year-on-year basis, the output also recorded a modest increase from 198,353.62 mscf in March 2024, highlighting a consistent upward trend in gas production.
Breakdown of Gas Output
Of the total March 2025 output:
- 119,552.75 mscf was associated gas, which is produced alongside crude oil.
- 108,378.90 mscf was non-associated gas, which is developed independently, often requiring substantial investment in exploration and infrastructure.
Government Push for Investment in Gas
The Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas) attributed the increase in output to ongoing policy efforts aimed at attracting both local and foreign investment into Nigeria’s gas sector. These policies are designed to accelerate infrastructure development and enhance production capacity across the country.
NLNG Train 7 Project Set to Boost Capacity Further
In a related development, Nigeria LNG Limited reaffirmed its commitment to long-term gas development through the NLNG Train 7 Project. The project is expected to:
- Expand production capacity by 35%, from 22 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to 30 mtpa.
- Strengthen Nigeria’s position as a leading global supplier of LNG.
- Capitalize on the country’s proven gas reserves of 202 trillion cubic feet, currently the 9th largest globally.
“This expansion positions Nigeria as a top-tier LNG supplier and supports our role in the global energy market,” NLNG stated.
Outlook
With infrastructure projects like Train 7 and continued policy support from the federal government, Nigeria is poised to increase its gas production and export potential significantly—paving the way for economic growth, job creation, and energy security.
