Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno Hints at Leaving PDP, Sparks Defection Rumors

Ahmad April 30, 2025
Gov-Umo-Eno

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has ignited political speculation after questioning the future viability of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a platform for his political aspirations beyond 2027.

Speaking at a constituency outreach meeting in Ikot Akpankuk, Ukanafun Local Government Area, the governor used a loaded analogy to express his doubts about the PDP’s direction.

“If you wanted to travel with Ibom Airline, and on the verge of taking off, it developed a fault that won’t enable it to fly, won’t you board the next available plane to take you to your destination?” he asked the crowd.

Many interpreted the remark as a veiled signal that the governor may be considering a defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The comment comes amid increasing discontent within the PDP, which has seen high-profile defections, most notably that of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. A former lawmaker, Otuekong Sunny Jackson Udoh, also advised Governor Eno to demonstrate wisdom and political maturity following his recent Supreme Court victory.

Commitment to Governance Amid Uncertainty

Despite his remarks, Governor Eno urged his supporters to remain focused on his administration’s development goals, reiterating that service delivery remains his priority.

At the town hall meeting, the governor distributed empowerment packages to over 400 residents as part of a grassroots engagement initiative. Beneficiaries included:

  • 154 traders receiving direct grants
  • 116 farmers supported with agricultural aid
  • 4 entrepreneurs awarded ₦5 million each for business growth
  • 131 individuals benefiting from tools and equipment

The governor cautioned recipients against investing in Ponzi schemes or unproductive ventures, urging them to use the funds wisely to improve their livelihoods.

“Governance doesn’t end at elections,” he said. “We’re here to listen, to assess your needs, and to let you know what we’ve done and what we plan to do.”

Broader Political Implications

Governor Eno emphasized that four of the state’s 10 federal constituencies have been reached so far in his administration’s grassroots engagement tour. He assured citizens that all constituencies will be consulted ahead of the 2026 budget planning cycle.

Although no formal defection has been declared, Eno’s pointed remarks have added fuel to discussions about a potential realignment in Akwa Ibom’s political structure—and may signal deeper fractures within the national opposition landscape.
