More Labour Party Members Defect to PDP in Enugu, Declare End of LP in State
In a significant political shift, more key members of the Labour Party (LP) in Enugu have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), further weakening LP’s influence in the state ahead of 2027.
The defectors include Hon. Dennis Agbo (Igboeze/Udenu Federal Constituency), Hon. Mark-Chidi Obetta (Igboeze South/Nsukka Federal Constituency), and Hon. Malachi-Okey Onyechi (Nsukka West State Constituency). They formally returned to the PDP on Thursday during a ceremony at the party’s secretariat in Enugu.
Their defection follows the recent exit of LP’s 2023 governorship candidate Chijioke Edeoga, and other prominent chieftains Prince Emeka Mamah and Titus Odo, who rejoined the PDP earlier in the week.
Onyechi expressed delight at reuniting with his former political family and pledged to collaborate with others to strengthen the PDP. He lauded Governor Peter Mbah for initiating a ₦2 billion development project across Enugu’s 260 political wards.
Obetta cited Mbah’s visible strides in transportation, education, health, and hospitality as key reasons for his return. “Enugu State will achieve more if everyone partners with Mbah,” he said.
Agbo went further to predict the collapse of the Labour Party in Enugu, stating, “There will be no LP again in Enugu State… It will be very difficult for the opposition.”
The defectors praised Mbah’s visionary leadership and called for his re-election in 2027.
PDP State Chairman Dr. Martin Chukwunwike, while receiving the returnees, expressed satisfaction, declaring the party’s internal crisis resolved. “With their defection, the trouble we encountered in the 2023 election is over. The tsunami is over, and 2027 will be seamless,” he said.
The Labour Party defection in Enugu marks a major political realignment as the PDP consolidates its base and eyes a stronger position ahead of future elections.
