Abuja – Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has denied rumors suggesting he intends to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Instead, he reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP and revealed ongoing efforts to form a national coalition to unseat the APC in the 2027 general elections.

Atiku spoke during a meeting with PDP women members of the Board of Trustees (BoT), led by former Minister of Women Affairs, Hajia Inna Ciroma. The visit aimed to address the internal crisis plaguing the party and to prevent further defections and disunity.
“The coalition movement is a necessity, not just a political strategy,” Atiku reportedly told the BoT members, insisting that the initiative will challenge APC dominance and work to rebuild Nigeria.
He cited historical precedents like the NPN-NPP alliance during Nigeria’s Second Republic, adding that the coalition would not affect the PDP’s name or identity.

According to Atiku, the coalition is a pan-Nigerian movement, involving leaders from across the political spectrum who are committed to rescuing the country from decline. He emphasized that the current situation demands a unified front against what he described as APC’s misrule.

Speaking to journalists, Hajia Inna Ciroma explained the reason for their visit:
“As mothers and conscience of the party, we are deeply concerned. The PDP is in crisis with no clear leadership. We visited Atiku to brainstorm on how to revive and reposition the party.”
She added that the party must be properly funded and democratically controlled — not by a few wealthy individuals.
“He told us clearly he’s not leaving the PDP. He also encouraged us to embrace the coalition and support party restructuring,” Ciroma noted.
