Ayra Starr Bags 3 BET Awards 2025 Nominations, Outshines Burna Boy, Tems Among African Nominees

The 2025 BET Awards nominations are out, and Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has emerged as a leading African contender, clinching three major nominations — more than Burna Boy, Tems, or any other African nominee.

Ayra Starr, known for her infectious energy and genre-blending style, was nominated in the categories of:

  • Best Female R&B/Pop Artist
  • Best New Artist
  • Best International Act

This recognition follows a year of impressive chart success and rising global acclaim.

Tems, another Nigerian star, earned two nominations in the BET Her category for her soul-stirring tracks “Burning” and “Hold On,” both featured on her acclaimed debut album Born In The Wild. Her presence on the list affirms her position as one of the leading voices in contemporary global music.

Africa’s influence on global music is unmistakable this year, with a strong showing in the Best New International Act category. Breakout artists Shallipopi, Odeal, Maglera Doe Boy, Abigail Chams, and Dlala Thukzin also received nominations.

Other African stars on the 2025 BET nominations list include:

  • Burna Boy
  • Rema
  • Tyla
  • Black Sherif
  • Uncle Waffles
  • TxC

In the wider categories, Hollywood star Cynthia Erivo secured two nods: Best Actress and BET Her for her duet “Defying Gravity” with pop icon Ariana Grande.

Kendrick Lamar leads all artists with 10 nominations, while Doechii, Drake, Future, and GloRilla each earned six. Metro Boomin has five, while SZA and The Weeknd scored four nominations apiece.

Monde Twala, SVP at Paramount Africa & BET International, praised African talent, stating:

“These talents represent the heartbeat of a new generation. We’re proud to celebrate their impact and creativity on a global stage.”

The BET Awards 2025 aims to spotlight Black excellence across music, film, television, and sports, with winners chosen by the BET Voting Academy, made up of entertainment professionals and cultural influencers.
