Guardiola Calls Man City’s 2024/25 Campaign the Toughest of His Career

Guardiola Admits 2024/25 Is His Toughest Season as Man City’s Title Hopes Fade

MANCHESTER — Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has described the 2024/25 campaign as the toughest of his 16-year managerial career, following a disappointing season marked by injuries, loss of form, and an early Champions League exit.

Despite enjoying unprecedented success at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and City, including four consecutive Premier League titles, the Spanish tactician said the current season has tested him more than any other.

“It’s been the most difficult, that’s for sure,” said Guardiola. “Much more demanding emotionally — in terms of preparation and morale.”

City’s title challenge collapsed in the winter months, and while they remain in contention for a top-five finish, as well as the FA Cup and the upcoming Club World Cup, Guardiola admitted the campaign has failed to meet the club’s high standards.

Injuries and Form Behind City’s Decline

One of the season’s key issues has been injuries, particularly to crucial midfielder Rodri, along with inconsistent performances across the squad.

“We had a lot of injuries. We didn’t have the energy,” Guardiola confessed. “We tried most of the time but were not able to do it.”

The manager also accepted his share of the blame, suggesting he struggled to find the right balance to help his players regain their rhythm.

“I didn’t find the way to let them feel comfortable and winning the games.”

Still Fighting for Silverware

Despite their struggles, Manchester City could still end the season on a positive note. They are firmly in the mix for Champions League qualification, which Guardiola described as a “big, big prize,” and they remain in the FA Cup competition.

City’s Champions League dreams ended prematurely after a defeat to Real Madrid in the knockout rounds, adding to a season of unfulfilled expectations.

“Even with all the setbacks, I would say, it could be worse. I was not good enough to find a way — but we didn’t give up.”
