FG Advised to Drop NCAT Decentralization Plan, Opt for University Upgrade Instead
The Chief Executive Officer of Starburst Aviation UK, David Olubadewo, has called on the Federal Government to abandon its proposal to decentralize the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, and instead convert it into a full-fledged aviation university.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lagos, Olubadewo appealed to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to consider the long-term value of upgrading NCAT rather than fragmenting it—a move he believes would be both financially burdensome and unsustainable.
“NCAT is already a centre of excellence. Splitting it would not only dilute its value but also waste public funds,” said Olubadewo, a former pilot instructor at NCAT.
He proposed that NCAT be modeled after globally recognized institutions like Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the United States or linked with top U.S. aviation universities for international collaboration.
Olubadewo noted that NCAT has earned the designation of an ICAO Regional Centre of Excellence, reinforcing its status as one of Africa’s best aviation schools.
“Under the right leadership, NCAT could be Nigeria’s first aviation university—a legacy achievement for Minister Keyamo and President Tinubu,” he added.
He further warned that future administrations might reverse any decentralization due to the heavy financial demands of maintaining multiple centers.
As an alternative to decentralizing NCAT, Olubadewo suggested the establishment of four additional aviation schools in key regions—South-East, South-West, North-Central, and North-East—to democratize access to aviation education.
“Let’s train more air traffic controllers, pilots, engineers, and meteorologists across the country. Not everyone can afford to study abroad,” he emphasized.
