Ballon d’Or 2024 to Be Held September 22 with Gender Equality in Awards for First Time
The prestigious Ballon d’Or award ceremony will take place on September 22, 2024, in Paris at the Théâtre du Châtelet, organisers announced on Monday. For the first time in the award’s history, the number of prizes for male and female players will be equal.
This year’s edition will also mark a new chapter as UEFA joins France Football magazine in co-organising the annual event, widely considered the most coveted individual honour in football.
⚽ New Awards for Women Introduced
To ensure parity, the following new women’s football awards have been added:
- Best Women’s Goalkeeper
- Best Young Women’s Player
- Top Women’s Scorer in club or national competitions
These join the existing Ballon d’Or Féminin, ensuring six women’s awards—matching the six men’s categories.
Additionally, the Socrates Award, which recognises social and humanitarian efforts in football, will remain a gender-neutral prize.

The full list of nominees for each category will be revealed in early August 2024, ahead of the star-studded event in Paris.
🏆 Recap of Last Year’s Controversy
The 2023 Ballon d’Or ceremony was marred by controversy when Real Madrid boycotted the event after Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior missed out on the Best Men’s Player award, which was awarded to Rodri of Manchester City.
