2027: Tinubu’s Endorsement by APC Is a Desperate Power Grab — PRP

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has sharply criticized the recent endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in 2027 by the All Progressives Congress (APC), calling the move a “desperate power grab” that ignores the realities faced by Nigerians.

The endorsement, announced during the APC National Summit last Thursday, had the backing of the APC National Working Committee, the Progressive Governors Forum, and National Assembly members.

In a strongly worded statement signed by PRP National Chairman Dr. Falalu Bello, the party declared that such endorsements “weaken democracy” and fail to reflect genuine public sentiment.

“Democracy is not just about endorsements or party machinery; it is about delivering tangible service, security, and dignity to the people,” Bello said.

Global Lessons on Power and Popular Will

To emphasize its point, the PRP referenced international cases where leaders lost power despite controlling political machinery:

  • Ivory Coast (2010): Laurent Gbagbo was forced out despite clinging to power with endorsements.
  • Zambia: Edgar Lungu lost to Hakainde Hichilema after public frustration surged.
  • Gambia: Yahya Jammeh, who once boasted of ruling for “a billion years,” was voted out by the people.

“Power, when rooted in the people’s trust, is resilient; when based on desperation and manipulation, it is fragile,” the PRP said.

Nigerians Are Suffering, PRP Says

The party highlighted the worsening economic crisis, rising fuel costs, joblessness, and insecurity, saying Nigerians are no longer aligned with the current administration’s direction.

“When citizens whisper, ‘This is not what we voted for,’ it signals a fundamental disconnect between leadership and the governed,” Bello stated.

A Call for Performance, Not Politics

The PRP urged President Tinubu and the APC to focus on delivering real solutions instead of relying on political endorsements to secure future power.

“We stand with the Nigerian masses who are crying out for real change, not power grabs,” the statement added.
“The future belongs to those who understand that power must be rooted in the people’s trust, not in the desperation of those seeking to hold onto it at all costs.”
