‘We Can Do Big Things’: Xabi Alonso Begins Coaching Journey at Real Madrid with High Hopes

MADRID — Former Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso has returned to the club as head coach, officially presented on May 26, 2025, at the Real Madrid Sports City in Valdebebas. The 43-year-old Spaniard takes over from Carlo Ancelotti, who has departed to manage the Brazil national team.

Alonso, who led Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga and German Cup double in 2023-24, has signed a three-year contract running until June 2028.

“We have fantastic players with potential for a great present and future,” Alonso said. “I’m here with energy and conviction that we can achieve big things worthy of Real Madrid.”

A Homecoming for a Madrid Legend

Alonso played 236 games for Real Madrid between 2009 and 2014, winning six trophies, including the historic La Decima (10th UEFA Champions League title) in his final season.

“It’s a special day for me — one I’ll have marked in my calendar for life,” Alonso reflected. “Even after all these years away, the connection with Madrid never ended.”

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez warmly welcomed Alonso back:

“This is a very special day for those who love Real Madrid. A new era begins with one of our own — welcome home, Xabi Alonso.”

Taking Over in a Challenging Moment

Alonso steps in during a difficult moment for Los Blancos, who failed to win any major trophies in the 2024-25 season. Madrid lost the La Liga title to Barcelona, who also beat them in both the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup finals.

In Europe, Madrid’s Champions League campaign ended in the quarter-finals with a heavy defeat to Arsenal, dashing hopes of defending their crown.

Alonso’s first challenge as manager will come at the FIFA Club World Cup, where Real Madrid will face Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in Miami on June 18.

From Player to Coach: A Rising Star

A decorated former midfielder, Alonso won the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships with Spain. His coaching path has been shaped under the guidance of managers like Carlo Ancelotti, Pep Guardiola, and Jose Mourinho.

His rapid rise with Bayer Leverkusen made him one of Europe’s most in-demand coaching talents, with Real Madrid acting swiftly to secure his services.

“It feels like the start of an era,” said Alonso. “The ambition, the badge, the fans — everything pushes you to be your best here.”
