Child and Adult Seriously Injured After Car Ploughs Into Crowd at Liverpool FC Parade

What began as a joyous celebration of Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory turned into horror on Sunday evening as a car drove into a crowd on Water Street, injuring 27 people—including four children.

Emergency services responded rapidly to the scene just after 6:00 PM BST, rescuing four people trapped beneath the vehicle, including a child. Two victims, one adult and one child, are reported to have sustained serious injuries, while the remaining were treated either at the scene or at hospitals across Liverpool.

Merseyside Police confirmed the arrest of a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area, believed to be the driver. The incident is not being treated as terrorism, and investigations into the motive are ongoing.

Eyewitness Accounts and Community Response

An eyewitness described grabbing his daughter and diving to safety moments after the Liverpool FC team bus passed. The mood, described by BBC’s Olly Foster, “changed instantly” on Water Street from joy to chaos.

Fire and rescue crews worked urgently to lift the car and free those pinned underneath. One paramedic on a bike was also struck, though not seriously injured.

National and Local Leaders React

Kenny Dalglish, a Liverpool FC legend, expressed his horror, saying the club’s anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” “has never felt more appropriate.”

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the entire nation stands with Liverpool, praising the “remarkable bravery” of emergency responders. Liverpool MP Ian Byrne called the event “heartbreaking,” while Liverpool’s rivals Manchester United also expressed solidarity.

City Urges Caution and Respect

Liverpool City Council urged the public not to share distressing footage and to cooperate with police. Local hospitals asked people not to call in, assuring that next of kin would be contacted directly.

The incident cast a dark shadow over what should have been a historic day for the city, with tens of thousands celebrating the club’s triumph before tragedy struck.
