Midterm: Buhari Hails Tinubu’s Leadership, Urges Nigerians to Moderate Expectations
By Stephen Angbulu – May 29, 2025
As President Bola Tinubu marks two years in office, former President Muhammadu Buhari has extended his congratulations, while urging Nigerians to remain patient with ongoing reforms and avoid letting “nettlesome domestic politics” hinder progress.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Buhari emphasized that while the administration’s economic reforms are necessary, their success will be gradual.
“Reforms would achieve success gradually, not overnight,” the former President stated.
He cautioned against placing unrealistic expectations solely on the federal government, especially in tackling poverty and inflation, which he said have hit the poorest families the hardest.
Support for APC and Tinubu’s Reform Agenda
The statement, titled “Tinubu Gets Buhari’s Praise, Advice At Midterm,” also called for collective national effort.
“The private sector and all of us as citizens must join in all ways we can,” Buhari said.
He reaffirmed his support for President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which, since 2023, has implemented major policies including:
- Ending petrol subsidies
- Floating the naira
- Repaying a $3.4 billion COVID-19 loan
However, these reforms have contributed to a cost-of-living crisis, sparking debate among citizens and economists.
APC Endorses Tinubu for 2027
Just days before the midterm anniversary, on May 23, 2025, the All Progressives Congress (APC) officially endorsed President Tinubu as its sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election, amid defections from opposition parties.
Buhari’s remarks come as a rallying call for unity within the APC and across Nigeria, encouraging citizens to support the government in its reform efforts.
“Our expectations from our governments should not get heavy,” Buhari concluded.
“I am wishing President Tinubu heartfelt congratulations on his two years in office. May you keep leading with wisdom and care.”
