Midnight Flood Kills 21, Sweeps Away 50 Homes in Niger State

MOKWA, NIGER STATE — At least 21 corpses have been recovered and dozens declared missing after a midnight flood caused by torrential rainfall ravaged parts of Mokwa Local Government Area in Niger State on Tuesday night.
The disaster, described as one of the worst in recent years, submerged over 50 residential houses, swept away vehicles, and left entire communities in shock. The worst-hit areas are Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa within Mokwa town.
Eyewitnesses recounted a scene of chaos as residents and commuters were caught unawares, with many homes collapsing under the force of floodwaters. Several commercial vehicles, private cars, and trucks were also trapped, as drivers struggled to navigate through the rising water — with no immediate rescue in sight.
As of Thursday morning, officials confirmed the recovery of 21 bodies, including those of a woman and her two children. Several injured survivors are being treated at Mokwa General Hospital.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement, noting:
“There was a torrential downpour of very high intensity that lasted several hours, and the surging floodwaters submerged and washed away over 50 residential houses with their occupants.
“In response, the agency, in collaboration with Mokwa Local Government Authority, local divers, and brave volunteers, are conducting search and rescue operations.”
NSEMA also confirmed that search efforts are still ongoing, with more bodies feared to be buried beneath debris or carried away by the waters.
