Kano Sports Festival Bus Crash: 21 Confirmed Dead, 11 Injured
KANO – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of 21 individuals in a fatal road crash involving the Kano State contingent to the National Sports Festival. The accident occurred on Saturday, May 31, 2025, around 12:30 p.m. at Gadar Yankifi in Garun Malam LGA, along the Kano–Kaduna Road.
According to Sector Commander Mohammed Bature, the lone accident involved a Toyota Coaster Bus with registration number KN041 A17, owned by the Kano State Government. The bus was carrying 32 persons—31 men and 1 woman—when it crashed due to overspeeding.
FRSC Report:
“Sadly, 21 persons lost their lives, while the remaining passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries,” said CRC Abdullahi Labaran, spokesperson for the FRSC.
All victims—injured and deceased—were evacuated to Nasarawa Specialist Hospital in Kano.
Overspeeding Blamed for Tragedy
The preliminary investigation by the FRSC points to overspeeding as the main cause of the tragic incident. Sector Commander Bature warned motorists against reckless driving, overloading, and traffic violations, which continue to cause avoidable road fatalities.
He added:
“We deeply regret the tragic loss of lives and extend heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. We pray for the quick recovery of the injured and reiterate our commitment to safer roads.”
FRSC Safety Measures Ongoing
The agency has reaffirmed its dedication to road safety awareness, increased patrols, and intensified public education campaigns to prevent future tragedies.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility,” said Bature. “Drivers must play their part in ensuring our roads are safe for all.”
