Jerusalem, June 12 (BBC/Updated by Ahmad Adelopo) – Iran has launched a barrage of ballistic missiles at Israel, marking a dramatic escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two countries. This follows Israeli airstrikes that reportedly destroyed major nuclear infrastructure in Iran’s Isfahan region.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, vowed to “inflict heavy blows” on Israel in response to what Tehran describes as an unprovoked act of war. Explosions and air raid sirens have echoed across Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, with plumes of smoke rising over the Israeli capital.
Reports indicate that Iran’s missile attacks were triggered by Israel’s overnight airstrikes targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities in Isfahan, Natanz, and near Tehran. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claim they destroyed uranium conversion labs and metallic uranium production facilities – critical components of Iran’s nuclear program.
BBC correspondents in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem reported loud explosions, missile interceptions, and scenes of panic as residents rushed into bomb shelters. Video footage confirmed missile streaks across the sky and bright flashes above densely populated areas.
“This is the response Israel expected,” said BBC reporter Lucy Williamson from Tel Aviv, as sirens blared and civilians took shelter from incoming fire.
In Tehran, air defenses lit up the night sky. Iranian media reported explosions near the Fordow nuclear site south of the capital. Fordow is one of Iran’s most secure and controversial facilities, having previously enriched uranium to near-weapons-grade levels.
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump, reacting to the crisis, urged Iran to return to the negotiating table over its nuclear program. He warned of “even more brutal” consequences if Tehran escalates further. However, critics say his remarks are inconsistent, given the U.S. administration’s prior knowledge of the Israeli strikes.
Global analysts say this escalation could mark a turning point in Middle East tensions. Israel’s attacks are being seen as a calculated risk, with commentators suggesting further strikes may follow.
In response to the missile onslaught, Israeli authorities have advised citizens to minimize movement, stay near protected shelters, and avoid large gatherings. A missile was also reportedly launched from Yemen, further indicating the widening scope of the conflict.
As of now, casualties are unconfirmed, but both sides are bracing for more attacks. The international community is calling for restraint, but with key military leaders reportedly assassinated and nuclear sites destroyed, the path to de-escalation appears narrow.
