More than 3,000 children were thrilled as Super Eagles stars including Victor Osimhen, William Troost-Ekong, and host Wilfred Ndidi lit up the 2025 Maracana Children’s Fest on Saturday at the iconic Maracana Stadium in Ajegunle, Lagos.

The annual event, sponsored by Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, brought together children from across Lagos to celebrate football, talent, and dreams — right in the heart of one of Nigeria’s most football-legendary communities.

Other stars present included Frank Onyeka (FC Augsburg), Victor Boniface (Bayer Leverkusen), Raphael Onyedika (Club Brugge), and ex-international Jonathan Akpoborie.

The children participated in spirited five-a-side matches across 19 mini-pitches, watched closely by the football icons they idolize. The excitement peaked when Osimhen, African Footballer of the Year, made his entrance to roaring cheers from the young crowd.

Ndidi’s Message to the Kids

Speaking at the event, Ndidi shared how giving back to his roots fills him with joy:

“The smiles on the kids’ faces are heart-warming. This event is growing year after year, and I’m proud it gives hope to so many.”

He added that the choice of Maracana Stadium was intentional because of its history of producing stars like Odion Ighalo, and its strong ties to grassroots football.

“Our goal is to preserve Maracana’s legacy and keep producing champions from Ajegunle. Seeing someone like Osimhen live gives these kids real hope.”

Ndidi emphasized the importance of education alongside football:

“We’ve already spotted talented players here, but I remind them: never leave school. Education is key.”

Organisers Laud the Stars’ Commitment

Yemi Idowu, programme coordinator, hailed the players for honoring the invitation despite their tight schedules:

“This is the first time seven Super Eagles players are attending together. Their presence shows true dedication.”

He also praised the successful use of 19 mini-pitches hosting over 3,000 kids simultaneously — proof that large-scale grassroots events are achievable in Nigeria.

Lagos FA and Community Leaders Weigh In

LSFA Vice Chairman, Oladotun Coker, applauded the initiative:

“It’s a shining example of grassroots development. These children met their heroes face-to-face — that’s unforgettable.”

Community leaders, including Mr. Fatai Ayoola, Chairman of Ajegunle Development Council, and traditional rulers, were also present to support the event.

What’s Next?

Organizers say the next edition of the fest is set for December 2025, promising even bigger participation and community impact.
