Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid Stars: “Vinicius and Mbappe Must Defend Too”

Xabi Alonso Sends Clear Message to Real Madrid Attackers: “Everyone Must Defend”

Newly appointed Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has issued a strong message to his star-studded squad, including Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, stressing that defensive commitment is mandatory for all players.

Speaking during a press conference ahead of Madrid’s Club World Cup match against RB Salzburg, Alonso made it clear that even the most attacking talents must contribute defensively.

“One thing is certain — we need all 11 players on the pitch to defend,” Alonso stated. “They must stay compact, understand how we press, and execute together. Without that unity, we will face difficulties.”

Alonso specifically named attackers like Vinicius, Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, and Mbappe as key figures who must adapt to this collective defensive mentality. The new coach’s philosophy contrasts with former manager Carlo Ancelotti, who previously allowed Mbappe to focus mainly on scoring rather than pressing.

Mbappe, who netted 43 goals in his debut season for Real Madrid after arriving from PSG, will not feature against Salzburg. The French forward is recovering from a stomach bug and only returned to light training on Wednesday.

“It was good to see Kylian back on the pitch, but he’s not yet match-fit,” Alonso said. “He told me himself that he’d rather aim to be fully ready for the Round of 16.”

Real Madrid will look to secure the top spot in Group H when they face Austrian side RB Salzburg in Philadelphia on Thursday. However, they’ll be missing key firepower without Mbappe.

Meanwhile, Brazilian winger Rodrygo, who was benched in Madrid’s 3-1 win over Pachuca, continues to face speculation over his future. Alonso, however, affirmed the player’s importance.

“Rodrygo is enthusiastic and training well,” he said. “It was a tactical choice to leave him out last time, but he remains a key part of our squad for this tournament.”

As Real Madrid continues its campaign for global glory, Alonso’s emphasis on unity and defensive responsibility marks a clear shift in the club’s tactical direction.
