MAKURDI — Ten passengers of the Benue State-owned Benue Links Transport Company, who were abducted along the Eke-Elengbecho axis of Okpokwu Local Government Area, have been released after one week in captivity, the company confirmed on Sunday.

The victims were traveling from Abeokuta to Makurdi on Sunday, June 22, when their bus ran into an ambush by gunmen. Out of the 12 passengers initially abducted, two had earlier been rescued, leaving 10 in captivity until their release on Sunday, June 29.

Company Confirms Safe Return

In a statement issued by Johnson Daniel, Information Officer of Benue Links Nigeria Limited, the company expressed relief and gratitude for the safe return of the passengers.

“We are deeply grateful that they have returned safely and are in stable condition,” the statement read. “Appropriate medical evaluations and counselling are currently ongoing to support their well-being after this distressing ordeal.”

Daniel thanked security agencies, community leaders, and others who played vital roles in ensuring the victims’ release.

Security Measures and Justice Promised

Benue Links also reaffirmed its commitment to passenger safety and said enhanced security protocols would be implemented across all routes.

“We will continue to collaborate with law enforcement to ensure that justice is served and such incidents do not reoccur,” the company added.

Police Yet to Confirm

When contacted for comment, Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, said she had not yet received full details of the release.
