Nigeria in Decline: Emir Sanusi Laments Economic Collapse, Calls for Labour Union Revival

KANO — The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has raised alarm over the deteriorating state of Nigeria’s economy and social systems, stating that every sector in the country is battered and declining. He made the call for national reflection through his representative, Dr. Auwalu Mudi Yakasai, during the 51st National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), held at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Kano.

Speaking on behalf of the monarch, Yakasai described the hardship in Nigeria as unprecedented, citing the sharp rise in fuel prices, economic instability, and a decline in public services including education, health, and social welfare.

“Every other sphere of human endeavour in Nigeria is now being battered — the economy, social life, education, health — all are going down,” Sanusi lamented.

Labour Unions Losing Their Voice

Sanusi criticized the current state of Nigeria’s labour movement, stating that it has lost the influence it once held as a defender of the masses.

“Labour was once the vanguard of resistance, standing shoulder to shoulder with students, traders, and clerics. Today, labour seems to have lost its voice,” he said.

He challenged labour leaders to return to the three foundational principles of trade unionism:

  • Cooperation
  • Contestation
  • Confrontation

“You start with cooperation. If that fails, move to contestation. If that too fails, then you confront,” he advised, emphasizing that confrontation doesn’t always mean a strike — it can take many forms.

Praise for SSANU Leadership

Sanusi commended SSANU President Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim for promoting inclusive and democratic union leadership, and urged union members to ensure that their leadership translates into tangible benefits for workers.

He also observed the evolution of trade unionism in Nigeria, noting that modern labour leaders are more educated and empowered than their predecessors — but reminded them that this privilege must lead to better welfare for union members.

“Today’s union leaders fly by air. In our days, we didn’t. But those comforts must be matched with greater impact.”

A Call to Embrace Honour in Labour

Yakasai, who proudly identifies as a “Comrade,” said the title is earned through dedication and sacrifice to the cause of workers.

“Comrade is the title I cherish most. It cannot be bought — it must be earned.”

He concluded by urging participants to explore Kano State, describing it as peaceful, hospitable, and filled with history and culture.
