Breaking: Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Olakulehin, Is Dead at 90

📍 Ibadan Mourns as Monarch Passes One Year After Coronation

Ibadan, Nigeria – July 7, 2025:
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away at the age of 90, just one year after ascending the throne as the traditional ruler of the historic Yoruba city.

According to Vanguard sources, the revered monarch joined his ancestors in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025. The news has sent waves of mourning across Oyo State and the broader Yoruba nation.

👑 A Brief But Symbolic Reign

Oba Olakulehin became Olubadan in July 2024, succeeding the late Oba Lekan Balogun. His coronation marked a continuation of the highly respected traditional succession system unique to Ibadanland, where age and seniority determine ascension.

Despite his short time on the throne, Oba Olakulehin was seen as a symbol of wisdom, unity, and heritage, often calling for peace and development across Ibadan and the southwest region.

🏛️ Condolences and Traditional Transition

News of his passing has sparked deep sorrow among traditional rulers, political leaders, and citizens alike. The Oyo State Government is expected to issue an official statement and begin state burial arrangements in collaboration with the Olubadan-in-Council.

Attention now turns to the next in line within the Balogun and Otun lines, who will follow the respected Ibadan chieftaincy succession structure.

🗣️ Tributes Pour In

Leaders across Nigeria are beginning to send in their tributes:

  • “A father to all Ibadan sons and daughters. A man of dignity and peace. We have lost a giant,” said one prominent Ibadan High Chief.
  • Cultural groups described the monarch as “a custodian of Yoruba values and traditions who upheld the sanctity of the Olubadan stool.”
