A farmworker has died from injuries sustained during a US immigration raid on a legal cannabis farm near Los Angeles, officials confirmed Friday. The raid, conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Camarillo, California, led to the arrest of 200 undocumented migrants and triggered violent protests.
The deceased worker reportedly fell from a greenhouse roof during Thursday’s chaotic raid and later succumbed to injuries, according to the United Farm Workers union. While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the man was not in custody or being pursued, the incident has reignited criticism over federal immigration tactics.
“Although he was not being chased, he climbed onto a roof and fell 30 feet,” said DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin. A medivac was dispatched immediately.
Raid Sparks National Outrage and Legal Showdown
The raid, which took place in Ventura County at Glass House Farms’ cannabis operations in Camarillo and Carpinteria, also led to the rescue of 10 children suspected of being victims of forced labor and human trafficking.
Glass House Brands denied any wrongdoing, stating it “has never knowingly violated hiring practices or employed minors.”
The aftermath saw more than 500 protestors confront immigration agents. DHS confirmed that four U.S. citizens face charges for assaulting officers. Tear gas was deployed, and authorities say ICE vehicles were damaged by thrown objects.
Trump Calls Protestors ‘Slimeballs’
Former President Donald Trump, who has doubled down on hardline immigration policy, responded on his Truth Social account, describing the protestors as “thugs” and “slimeballs.”
“I am giving Total Authorisation for ICE to protect itself,” Trump posted, authorizing law enforcement to use “whatever means necessary” against attacks.
The Republican presidential hopeful also offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a suspect who allegedly fired at officers.
Judge Blocks ICE Roving Patrols in Los Angeles
In a significant legal development, District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong issued a court order halting ICE’s roving patrols in Los Angeles, criticizing the agency for racial profiling and making arrests without probable cause.
“These arrests were based solely on race, language, or occupation,” the judge stated. The ruling mandates due process for detained individuals.
Family Members Seek Answers
At the Camarillo site, family members of the detained gathered early Friday, desperate for updates.
“We’ve been here since six this morning,” said Saul Munoz, a Colombian father whose son was arrested. “We just want to know where they’ve taken him.”
“The truth is the American dream is no longer the American dream,” he added.
Tensions Rise in California
The incident comes amid a broader immigration enforcement crackdown by Trump, who recently deployed National Guard troops to Los Angeles to assist federal agents. California Governor Gavin Newsom has labeled the deployments “unnecessary,” but legal challenges to remove the troops have failed.
