Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have intensified military operations in Benue State, recovering weapons from fleeing herdsmen and neutralizing bandits in separate clearance operations over the weekend.

During a patrol on August 2, 2025, OPWS troops stormed Tse Adudu in the Gbanga/Tongo Council Ward following credible intelligence about illegal cattle grazing and threats to local farmers in Akpiti village. On arrival, the suspected armed herdsmen abandoned their cattle and fled into the nearby bushes.

A search of the area uncovered a hidden arms cache wrapped in a blanket and stored in a makeshift hut. The items recovered included:

  • One AK-47 rifle
  • One magazine
  • Five rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition

The herdsmen are believed to be responsible for multiple farm invasions and destruction of crops in the area.

Major General Moses Gara, Force Commander of OPWS, praised the troops for their professionalism and quick response. He also acknowledged the crucial role played by residents who provided actionable intelligence.

“The continued collaboration between locals and security forces is vital to defeating criminal elements and restoring peace,” Gara stated.

Bandit Camps Destroyed in Makurdi

In a separate clearance operation, troops of the 401 Special Forces Brigade/Sector 1 OPWS, alongside local hunters, raided the Tatough area in Makurdi Local Government Area. Several bandits were neutralized, and their hideouts were completely destroyed.

Gara reaffirmed the military’s commitment to restoring law and order while enhancing food security and economic activity in the region.
