The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched a thorough investigation into the mysterious death of a 45-year-old man, Mr. Udeme Sunday Uko, who was fatally shot while sleeping inside a church with his family in Ukanafun Local Government Area.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at around 12:10 a.m., in Ikot Oku Usung village, according to a statement released by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John.

Preliminary findings revealed that Mr. Uko, alongside his wife and children, was spending the night in the church when a loud gunshot rang out. Moments later, he was found lying in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to the head.

“There is a possibility of either suicide or a targeted attack by enemies, but a full investigation is ongoing to uncover the truth,” DSP John said.

The incident came to light when the victim’s wife alerted nearby residents, who promptly notified the authorities. Responding officers recovered a locally made pistol from the scene, which has been marked as an exhibit in the ongoing investigation.

Mr. Uko’s body has been deposited in a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The police assured the public that all necessary resources are being deployed to uncover the truth and bring any potential perpetrators to justice. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
