PDP Launches 2027 Zoning Panel, Dismisses Jonathan & Obi Return Speculations
With just two years to Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has inaugurated its National Working Committee Zoning Committee and 2027 Election Zoning Committee in Abuja, while refuting claims of official talks with former President Goodluck Jonathan and 2023 Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi.
Party insiders revealed that while some individuals have personally approached the two politicians, the PDP leadership has made no formal contact. Several NEC members expressed mixed feelings, recalling that both Jonathan and Obi left the PDP during critical periods, impacting the party’s electoral fortunes. Others stressed that the PDP already has credible aspirants, including Governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed.
National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba reaffirmed that the party has a rich pool of qualified contenders and is focused on its November elective convention in Ibadan. He warned that absolute loyalty will be demanded from all members.
Meanwhile, the APC dismissed PDP’s preparations, calling it a “struggling party” that poses no threat to President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
The PDP, recovering from a prolonged internal crisis and high-profile defections, is positioning itself as a strong contender with nationwide structures, while leaving the door open—albeit cautiously—to returning members like Jonathan and Obi.
