Brighton Fan Tragically Dies After Falling Ill During Fulham Match

Brighton Supporter Passes Away During Fulham Clash at Amex Stadium

A Brighton fan has tragically died after falling ill during the Premier League fixture between Brighton & Hove Albion and Fulham at the Amex Stadium.

The 72-year-old supporter, seated in the East Stand upper tier, collapsed in the second half of the game. Emergency responders, including club medics and paramedics, immediately rushed to his aid, administering CPR and defibrillation on site. Despite prolonged efforts, the man sadly passed away shortly after the match, which ended 1-1.

Club Confirms Death and Sends Condolences

Brighton CEO Paul Barber expressed deep sorrow following the incident:

“This was an incredibly sad end to the match this afternoon, and our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the family and friends of the gentleman who lost his life.”

Barber also acknowledged the distress experienced by nearby fans and staff, assuring that the club will provide full support to those affected in the coming days.

Why the Match Was Not Halted

Medical staff decided not to transfer the fan to hospital immediately, believing his best chance of survival was continuing treatment at the scene. Privacy screens were erected, while discussions were held with Sussex Police and Premier League officials about potentially suspending the game.

However, Brighton later clarified that play continued because most players and fans were unaware of the emergency. Stopping the game, they said, might have drawn unnecessary attention and complicated medical efforts.

Club doctor Dr Rob Galloway commended the emergency response, noting that the medical care was “exemplary” and thanking stewards and police for providing “the best possible working environment.”

Support for Fans

The club has urged any supporters emotionally affected by the incident to seek help, sharing helplines including Samaritans (116 123) and Young Minds (text 85258).

On the Pitch

In footballing terms, Brighton took the lead with a Matt O’Riley penalty in the 55th minute, before Rodrigo Muniz equalised for Fulham in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
