Kaduna PDP Rejects Bye-Election Results, Accuses APC of Intimidation and Vote-Buying

The Kaduna State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the outcome of the August 16 bye-elections held in three constituencies, alleging widespread irregularities, intimidation of party members, and abduction of its candidate.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had conducted the bye-elections in Basawa State Constituency, Zaria Kewaye State Constituency, and the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency to fill vacant seats.

In a statement issued on Monday, PDP State Chairman, Sir Edward Percy Masha, said the exercise fell far short of democratic standards and would not be accepted by the opposition party.

“We reject the outcome of the elections in all three constituencies. We will be meeting with our candidates, stakeholders, and legal team to determine our next course of action,” Masha declared.

Allegations Against APC

The PDP alleged that its candidate for the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency and members of his campaign committee were abducted during the election by persons linked to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party further accused the APC of seizing campaign funds meant for election logistics and allowances for party agents.

“These unlawful actions were carried out in full public glare. The APC shamelessly disregarded democratic principles and resorted to intimidation, vote-buying, and harassment because it was unsettled by the PDP’s popularity in the state,” the statement read.

Party leaders described the incidents as part of a larger pattern of desperation allegedly driven by Governor Uba Sani’s administration.

Low Voter Turnout Raises Concerns

The opposition also lamented the low voter turnout during the polls, attributing it to a growing lack of confidence in Kaduna’s electoral process.

According to the PDP, Governor Uba Sani’s failure to conduct local government elections in 2024 worsened voter apathy.

“The low turnout we witnessed is a testament to the lack of confidence in the electoral process. If this undemocratic trend continues, voter apathy will worsen and may peak dangerously by 2027,” Masha warned.

Appreciation to Supporters

Despite its rejection of the results, the PDP praised voters in Basawa, Zaria Kewaye, and Chikun/Kajuru constituencies for their support.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the good people of these constituencies for standing by the PDP. Your commitment and support will never be taken for granted,” the party said.

The Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency election, in particular, drew national attention due to its history as a PDP stronghold and its strategic role in Kaduna politics.
