The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has announced an indefinite ban on final-year students’ exam signing-off celebrations, citing recurring cases of violence and disruption.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Okeke, the university said the ban takes immediate effect and applies across all campuses.
According to the release, the decision followed repeated incidents of chaos, property damage, and the disruption of academic activities during the so-called “signing-off” ceremonies.
“The university management wishes to inform you that, effective immediately, all forms of orchestration (‘signing off’) related to final examinations by final-year students are completely and indefinitely banned from the university premises,” the statement read.
Okeke further noted that unauthorised outsiders often infiltrate the events, creating security threats for students, staff, and the larger university community.
The Registrar warned that students caught participating in the banned activity risk rustication, while outsiders found on campus during such events could face arrest and prosecution for disorderly conduct.
The statement stressed that UNIZIK remains committed to maintaining a safe and peaceful learning environment.
“We urge all students to focus on their academic responsibilities and report any instances of misconduct or threats to safety to the appropriate authorities,” it added.
The directive effectively ends the long-standing tradition of final-year “signing-off” celebrations at the university.
