President Bola Tinubu has summoned an emergency meeting of the Council of State and the Police Council for Thursday, October 9, 2025, to deliberate on the worsening insecurity and other pressing national challenges facing the country.
The sessions, scheduled to hold at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, reflect Tinubu’s renewed drive to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and restore public confidence amid growing incidents of banditry, kidnapping, and communal violence.
According to a statement on Monday by the Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Affairs Office, Dr. Emanso Umobong, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has formally invited members of both councils to attend either in person or virtually.
“The meetings aim to discuss matters of national importance and key issues affecting national security and policing. The Council of State meeting is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., while the Police Council meeting will hold at 2:00 p.m.,” the statement read.
The Council of State, chaired by the President, is an advisory body comprising former Presidents, former Heads of State, former Chief Justices of Nigeria, state governors, and the Attorney-General of the Federation. It advises the government on major policy issues, including national security and key appointments.
Meanwhile, the Police Council oversees the organisation, administration, and control of the Nigeria Police Force, particularly on the appointment and discipline of senior officers.
Presidency sources told The PUNCH that the Thursday meetings would review Nigeria’s overall security situation, assess ongoing military operations, and consider new strategies to tackle violent crimes across the country. The councils are also expected to deliberate on the nomination of a successor to the outgoing Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The meetings come just after President Tinubu’s return from a 10-day working visit to Lagos, where he held strategic discussions with investors and key partners on infrastructure, logistics, and energy development.
During his visit, Tinubu met with Global Infrastructure Partners CEO, Bayo Ogunlesi, and Metis Capital Partners Chairman, Keem Belo-Osagie, to attract fresh investments aimed at diversifying Nigeria’s economy and creating jobs.
He also hosted International Maritime Organisation Secretary-General, Arsenio Dominguez, alongside Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, to explore Nigeria’s growing blue economy potential.
Before returning to Abuja, the President attended events in Oyo, Imo, and Plateau States, where he reiterated his administration’s commitment to unity, peace, and inclusive national development.
“My mission is to unite this country and ensure its prosperity. Progress is being made on both fronts,” Tinubu said in Jos during a condolence visit to the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda.
Thursday’s meeting marks the second Council of State session under Tinubu’s administration and is expected to outline renewed strategies for intergovernmental coordination in addressing Nigeria’s multifaceted security and governance challenges.
