Tinubu faced many obstacles on the way to success. He had to compete with strong hitters and party members to secure his party’s ticket for the contest, including Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Ahmed Lawan, and former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, among others.
He would later deliver his now-famous “Emilokan (It is my turn)” speech on June 2, 2022, feeling frustrated by the president’s apparent lack of support and the reported opposition by important members of the Presidency.
“It is the turn of Yoruba, it is my turn,” he said while addressing party delegates at the Presidential Lodge in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
He described how Buhari consistently lost presidential elections until he (Tinubu) assisted him in winning in 2015.
It needed a strategic coalition with northern governors of states with historically high voter turnout rates, including Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto, and Plateau, among others, for him to overcome Amaechi and Osinbajo during the APC primaries.
It was a partnership that persisted throughout the election.
Three APC governors, notably Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna and Yahaya Bello of Kogi, sued the Federal Government in an effort to stop the policy’s full implementation after the Naira redesign strategy caused currency shortages, public outrage, and protests.
An 80-page manifesto that stresses an eight-point programme served as Tinubu’s campaign’s foundation.
He has pledged to establish a better Nigeria, especially for our youth, by creating enough jobs with fair pay.
