Abuja, Nigeria — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has initiated a bold political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, successfully taking over structures of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yobe, Gombe, and Adamawa states. This move is part of a wider strategy to form a strong opposition coalition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to Paul Ibe, media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the alignment is gaining traction, with top PDP executives pledging loyalty to the ADC-led coalition.
“This coalition is a response to creeping one-party dominance. Atiku will keep guiding the movement to ensure it grows from ward to state level,” Ibe said.
🧭 Zulum Denies Defection Rumours
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum debunked viral reports suggesting that he and five other APC governors were planning to defect to ADC.
“This is the handiwork of political desperados. My loyalty to APC remains firm,” Zulum stated through his spokesperson.
🎙️ Peter Obi: ‘I Remain in LP but Support the Coalition’
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi clarified his position in the coalition during an interview on Channels TV. While affirming loyalty to the Labour Party, he said ADC had been adopted as the coalition’s operating platform.
“The goal is a united opposition. For now, I remain in Labour Party, but we are working together for Nigeria,” Obi said, reaffirming his presidential ambition for 2027.

PDP Chairmen Forum leader Austin Nwachukwu dismissed reports of mass defections as fabricated. He insisted the party remains intact and described the defectors as elderly politicians chasing retirement benefits.
“Many of those who left have returned. We’re stronger than ever,” Nwachukwu said.

ADC interim spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi said the party aims to become the leading voice of opposition by welcoming frustrated politicians from the PDP, Labour Party, SDP, and NNPP.

In a fiery speech, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike attacked key figures in the coalition, calling them political failures. He criticized ADC’s interim secretary Rauf Aregbesola for poor performance as interior minister and mocked David Mark, Atiku Abubakar, and Rotimi Amaechi for switching parties.
“How can people who failed for decades now claim they want to rescue Nigeria?” Wike said. “They’re only trying to rescue their stomachs.”

APC National Secretary Dr. Ajibola Basiru dismissed the coalition as a deceptive political stunt, accusing opposition leaders of misleading Nigerians by falsely labeling defections as a “coalition.”

In a separate statement, ADC criticized the Tinubu-led government’s recent reform announcements, calling them desperate attempts to manage public perception due to ADC’s rising popularity.
