Anambra Police Hail Brave Resident Who Recorded Awka Abduction, Launch Probe into Kidnap, Killing Cases

The Anambra State Police Command has commended the bravery of a resident in Awka who risked personal safety to record a video capturing a suspected kidnapping in the city.

The viral video, which has circulated widely on social media, shows three armed men operating in a stainless-coloured Highlander SUV without a number plate. The assailants fired shots indiscriminately before abducting a victim in broad daylight on Friday, June 27.

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident in a statement issued Saturday, adding that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, praised the citizen’s courage, describing it as a powerful example of community participation in enhancing public safety.

“The Anambra State Police Command is leveraging the viral video of this criminal operation to drive ongoing investigations. The CP commends the individual whose brave act may be crucial in the ongoing rescue efforts,” said Ikenga.

He emphasized that the video would help in identifying the suspects, gathering key evidence, and facilitating arrests.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, the Command reported the recovery of the body of Mr. Chido Ozor, who was abducted from his piggery farm in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area, on June 19.

“Operatives recovered the lifeless body of a suspected kidnap victim, later identified as Ozor, in the early hours of June 23 near his farm,” Ikenga disclosed.

He noted that police teams had been tracking the suspected abductors since the incident and would intensify efforts to apprehend them and bring justice to the victim and his family.

These developments follow growing concerns about a resurgence in violent crimes across the state, including the recent killing of a traditional chief after a ₦15 million ransom was reportedly paid.

The Anambra Police Command urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activity, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens.
