APC Opens 2027 Presidential Ticket Despite Endorsing Tinubu for Second Term

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reaffirmed that its endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in 2027 will not exclude other aspirants from contesting the party’s presidential ticket.

Speaking at the APC national secretariat in Abuja, the party’s National Organising Secretary, Sulaiman Argungu, emphasized that the ruling party remains committed to democratic principles and internal competition.

Argungu noted that the APC leadership — including the National Working Committee, the Progressives Governors Forum led by Governor Hope Uzodinma, and the National Assembly leadership under Senate President Godswill Akpabio — had endorsed Tinubu in recognition of his “outstanding performance” since assuming office.

However, he stressed that no aspirant would be denied the right to contest when the official timetable for primaries is released.

“We will definitely not close our doors to other presidential aspirants. When the time comes, anybody who wants to aspire under APC will not be denied the opportunity to purchase forms and exercise their franchise,” Argungu said.

He dismissed suggestions that the APC might emulate the PDP’s 2014 decision to reserve its presidential ticket solely for then-President Goodluck Jonathan, insisting the ruling party will allow an open contest.

On the party’s recent performance in by-elections, Argungu attributed APC’s victory in 13 out of 16 contested seats to “the grace of Almighty Allah” and the dedication of its leaders and members nationwide.

He described the results as a sign of the party’s growing acceptance across Nigeria, adding that the APC remains committed to delivering purposeful leadership and good governance.
