Atiku Abubakar’s ADC Move Delayed: Here’s Why the Former VP Is Yet to Register Officially

ABUJA — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has not yet formalized his membership with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), days after resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), according to an insider familiar with the development.

The delay, sources say, is intentional and strategic.

A reliable source close to Atiku disclosed to Vanguard that the former vice president plans to personally complete the party registration, rather than delegating the task.

“He just returned briefly to Nigeria for the burial of the late President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, after a business trip abroad,” the source said. “From there, he headed back overseas for a two-week private break.”

The insider explained that a public, in-person declaration is essential due to Atiku’s political profile and the significance of the party switch.

“For someone of Atiku’s stature, the symbolism matters. Nigerians need to see him receive his ADC membership card physically. It’s more than paperwork — it’s a message.”

The source added that the registration will be scheduled for maximum media coverage and political impact, especially as realignments gain momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Although no specific date has been confirmed, the move is expected immediately after his return from the trip.

“His formal registration with ADC will mark a turning point in Nigeria’s opposition landscape,” the source emphasized.

Atiku’s eventual entry into the ADC is poised to reshape coalition dynamics and intensify preparations for the next presidential contest.
