Benue PDP Crisis Deepens as G14 Challenges Suswam Over Disbandment Claim

Adelopo Abdullah September 28, 2024

The political crisis within the Benue State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified, with stakeholders of the G14 group urging former Governor Gabriel Suswam to resign from the party if he so wishes. The G14, formed in 2015, consists of PDP elders from 14 local government areas dominated by the Tiv ethnic group. Suswam, who co-chairs the group, announced during a recent stakeholders’ meeting that he had disbanded the G14, proposing a new group to replace it.

However, the move appears to be linked to a power struggle between Suswam and his successor, Samuel Ortom, over control of the party. Ortom, who took office in 2023, has since assumed co-chairmanship of G14.

In response to Suswam’s announcement, G14 Chairman Laha Dzever rejected the claim, stating that the group remains intact. According to Dzever, G14 was formed to stabilize the party after it lost major seats in 2015 and cannot be disbanded by any single member, including Suswam. He emphasized that if Suswam wishes, he can resign from the group but has no authority to dissolve it.

Dzever further highlighted the role of G14 in uniting the party and working toward its success in future elections, adding that the group is focused on peace and reconciliation within the PDP to reclaim power in 2027.
